Chien-Ming Wang cruises through seven innings in Chiefs rehab start

Chien-Ming Wang considered each question, posed by his Taiwanese
interpreter, and solemnly described what had transpired Wednesday
at Alliance Bank Stadium.
Wang, who once conducted these conversations in the bowels of major league
ballparks as a New York Yankee, was in Syracuse for his most recent
rehabilitation assignment for the Washington Nationals.
He seemed generally pleased with his performance. And he had every right
to be.
Wang surrendered two runs in seven innings before the Chiefs’ bullpen
imploded and nearly coughed up a 10-2 lead. Syracuse won the game, 15-8,
in front of 3,517 fans at Alliance Bank Stadium. Most of those folks
likely came to watch Wang, the 32-year-old former major leaguer in Syracuse
to test his mending hamstring.
“He pitched really well,” said Chiefs manager Tony Beasley. “He threw
his sinker, threw some good curveballs, some change-ups. He did everything.
Threw really nicely, got his work in. A perfect scenario for him.”
Wang is still the long, lanky right-hander with the deliberate pause at
the top of his delivery that once enthralled Yankees fans.
In his prime, Wang mastered the strike zone and enticed batters to hit
ground balls with his signature sinker. He went 46-15 over three years
with New York, when he was considered the Yankees’ ace.
But injuries, coupled with ineffectual outings, conspired to drive Wang
from New York and into the Washington organization, where he has toiled
since 2010.
He made 11 starts and went 4-3 with the Nationals last year, but a
hamstring strain sustained in Spring Training this season relegated him
to the minor league rehab route. Syracuse was his third rehab start after
making appearances in Single A Hagerstown and Advanced-A Potomac.
The Bulls nicked Wang for a run in the first inning, when Jesus Feliciano
drilled a line-drive double to the wall in right field, and Stephen Vogt
singled to score him.
But Syracuse scored seven runs in two innings off Durham starter Alex Cobb,
who labored through 60 pitches before Bulls manager Charlie Montoya
mercifully lifted him.
While the Chiefs sent 10 batters to the plate in that 5-run second inning,
Wang wandered the Syracuse dugout and stretched to stay busy, a sleeve
dangling from his warming right arm. He had just efficiently dismissed
the Bulls in a 1-2-3 inning – all of them ground ball outs.
His sinker, the pitch that has defined him, seemed sharp and effective.
“Yeah, I tried my best, I tried to throw a lot of sinker balls to go back
to the normal days. I’m glad that the sinker was still there,” Wang said.
“The sinker is starting to come back.”
“It was good to see him throw the ball like that,” Beasley said.
“He’s getting back to where he was, getting healthy, just getting his
work done here until his time is up to head back to D.C.”
Wang, whose pre-game limit was 90 pitches, threw 89 times and lasted seven
innings. He allowed another run in the fifth on a liner to the gap in
right-center. On the previous play, Wang induced Kyle Hudson into a slow
grounder to first base, but Mark Teahen did not charge the ball, Wang was
late to the bag and Hudson reached on a fielder’s choice on what could
have been the final out of the inning.
But Teahen (5 RBIs) made two spectacular diving plays in the seventh
on ground balls destined for the right field line. Wang fielded each
perfect toss, stepped on the bag and then disappeared into the dugout,
his work complete. Of his 89 pitches, 61 of them were strikes.
With Wang safely in the clubhouse, Chiefs relievers gave up six runs,
four walks, five hits and a grand slam. The game lasted three hours
and 38 minutes.
“We did not pitch well with the lead,” Beasley said.
Whether Wang throws again in a Syracuse uniform remains to be seen.
He is in the middle of a 30-day rehab assignment and could pitch again
on Monday, his next scheduled start. The Chiefs play a noon home game.
Beasley said the Nationals have informed him only that Wang will stay
in Syracuse until Washington summons him. Beasley figures that means
Wang will be with the Chiefs for one, maybe two more starts.
“I just need to prepare myself, get myself ready and then let them
make the decision,” Wang said.
