Chien-Ming Wang has another solid rehab start in Harrisburg
July 7, 2011 9:01 PM by Ben Goessling
Chien-Ming Wang made his third rehab start at Double-A Harrisburg tonight,
and it's looking even more likely he could be back in the majors within a
matter of weeks.
The right-hander, who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2009 because of
shoulder surgery, allowed just two hits in five innings at Harrisburg, and
threw his sinker as hard as 92 mph. He's only allowed two runs in 12 innings
over three rehab starts, and while he could stay on his rehab assignment for
another two weeks, it seems like he's almost ready to return to the big
leagues.
It would be a significant milestone for the 31-year-old, who's been rehabbing
since signing with the Nationals in February 2010. And if it happens, it will
force the Nationals to make a decision in their rotation.
They've only needed seven starting pitchers all season, and only Tom
Gorzelanny has spent any time on the disabled list. They could trade Jason
Marquis this month, which would open up a spot for Wang, and Jordan
Zimmermann is likely to run out of innings by September. But until then,
the Nationals' rotation is fairly crowded.
Wang will likely make another rehab start in five days. We'll see what the
Nationals decide to do with him then.
