Pavano was plagued by so many injuries that he rehabilitated more than he pitched. With Jorge Posada up, the Yankees gave Gardner a steal sign because they wanted to avoid a rally-killing double play. “I didn’t get a really good jump and I just decided not to go, and I should have,” Gardner said. When Posada rapped a grounder to second base, the Indians’ closer, Kerry Wood, secured the inning-ending double play he needed. Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said he had spoken to Gardner about his decision. “I’ll just leave it at that,” Girardi said, knowing that a steal could have changed the inning. The follies continued in the bottom of the inning. Coke walked Crowe, who entered the game hitting .171, on five pitches. Asdrubal Cabrera failed in two bunt attempts before sacrificing Crowe to second on a 2-2 pitch. Robertson was summoned and walked Ben Francisco. He missed the strike zone against Peralta, then tried to come inside with a 3-1 fastball. It was too late. “It took me too long to make that pitch, and he got it,” Robertson said. “ It cost us the ballgame.” As Pavano lost his chance to defeat his old team, Chien-Ming Wang elevated his status with the Yankees. Wang replaced an inconsistent Phil Hughes to start the sixth, threw three scoreless innings and reached 94 miles per hour with his fastball. Teixeira had a two-run homer off Pavano in the sixth and added a two-run double off Matt Herges in the eighth to help the Yankees tie the score. Teixeira’s double meant that Pavano could not beat the Yankees. It was brief solace.
