Duca: Wang was all right
By ROB DUCA
BOSTON — The renewal of the rivalry began not with a bang, but with a
whimper.
From the Red Sox offense, that is.
Fans were treated to a no-hitter the last time Clay Buchholz was the starting
pitcher at home. They nearly saw another one last night — but not from
Buchholz.
The rookie right-hander pitched a solid six innings against the New York
Yankees, departing in a 1-1 deadlock. But this time it was the other guy on
the mound who dazzled the crowd.
Chien-Ming Wang came — in the words of Maxwell Smart — that close to
replicating Buchholz's achievement. If not for a cheap home run (yes, that's
what I said) by J.D. Drew and a meaningless two-out, ninth-inning Coco Crisp
bunt, history would have been made.
Coco Crisp
The Red Sox managed only two hits against Wang in a 4-1 loss, and he was
every bit as dominant as the numbers suggest. Wang fanned only three, but did
not issue a walk and breezed through the Red Sox order.
Facing a team renown for working counts — many starters that face the Red
Sox hit the century mark before the sixth inning — Wang needed a mere 93
pitches in a complete-game triumph. "He was very efficient," Red Sox manager
Terry Francona said.
He was never in trouble. He set down the first 10 and retired 13 of the final
14. Let there be little doubt, no one hit the ball particularly hard all
evening.
"His sinker and his slider were excellent," new Yankees manager Joe Girardi
said. "His stuff started getting better at the end of spring training."
His stuff has been overwhelming through the first month of the season.
The Yankees have six wins, and Wang is responsible for half of them. Last
night's effort dropped his ERA to 1.23. After back-to-back 19-win seasons, he
seems on his way to cracking 20 for the first time in his career.
"He only had one inning in the fifth that he had a little trouble," Girardi
said. "His pitches were up and they hit some fly balls off him, and J.D. Drew
hit the home run. But he was at the top of his game."
Perhaps you didn't watch the game. Highly unlikely, I know. But let's just
say . . . and you're wondering how a home run that broke up a no-hitter can
be labeled cheap. Well, maybe cheap isn't the best word. But it could have,
maybe even should have been caught.
Drew's high fly toward the Red Sox bullpen allowed right fielder Bobby Abreu
plenty of time to retreat to the wall. But he appeared a bit timid going
after it, he didn't stretch the glove much over the fence and the ball eluded
him and landed in the pen for the game's first hit.
Had this happened in the eighth or ninth, we'd really have a story on our
hands. But it took place in the fifth, somewhat lessening its impact. That
is, until Wang kept rolling through the Red Sox lineup without surrendering
another hit.
"Bobby had a bead on it. He had a good jump. But things like that are going
to happen," Girardi said.
By things like that, we assume the manager meant failing to make the play. Or
in harsher terms, blowing the play. Which is pretty much how Abreu candidly
explained it.
"I made contact with the wall and the ball hit my glove. I should have caught
it," he said.
Wang's no-hit bid had been preserved in the previous inning when Dustin
Pedroia's hot shot to third base was correctly ruled an error after Alex
Rodriguez made a diving back-handed grab and then threw high to first,
pulling Jason Giambi off the bag.
Crisp's bunt in the ninth (I'm betting he doesn't attempt that if the
no-hitter is still in play) was the only other blemish.
For all Wang's heroics, the game was hanging in the balance until the end.
Jason Giambi snapped a 1-for-20 beginning to the season with a solo home run
in the seventh off Mike Timlin that broke a 1-1 tie and the Yankees pushed
across another run in the inning for a 3-1 edge. They tacked on more
insurance in the ninth.
Still, when Crisp reached base, the Fenway crowd began to murmur, knowing
that if Pedroia could get aboard, David Ortiz would step to the plate as the
tying run. But Pedroia lined out. It might not have mattered anyway. Ortiz
endured another hitless night, dropping his batting average to .077.
In the end, Chien-Ming Wang wasn't perfect last night. All he lacked was a
little luck.
