""We're going to be as good as our pitching," manager Joe Torre said Sunday. On Sunday, that pitching, for the first time in three tries against the Minnesota Twins, was good enough to win. Starter Chien-Ming Wang was capable, and the Yankees were victorious, 9-3. Thus, they avoided a sweep by the Twins, who had not swept the Yankees since 1991. That was the year in which Minnesota won its last World Series. The 6-6 start to the 2006 season, while not particularly Yankee-like, is a very small sample. Last year, the Yankees were treading water a lot longer than this, still playing .500 baseball on July 1 (39-39). Torre says that he doesn't see that occurring with this club, that it is not the same team, which essentially means that this is a better team. One possible difference between this year and last year would be, Torre says, "going after it, as opposed to waiting for it to happen." Torre continued, "We're going to do whatever needs to be done. If we have to fight our way back the way we did last year, we'll do it. But I don't see us being the same team." That may very well be, but the issue will revolve around the pitching, particularly the starting pitching. With Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina generally pitching effectively, the current issue would be at least one other starter stepping forward to join them on a consistent basis. Torre said before Sunday's game that both Wang and Shawn Chacon were logical candidates to take that step. "These guys are capable of doing it," the manager said. "The pressure they dealt with last year sort of acclimated them as to what to expect." Wong was right on cue Sunday, working seven innings while giving up just one earned run, walking no one and striking out a career-high eight. It was a sturdy performance and a timely one, coming as it did after two consecutive Yankees losses, including a gut-wrenching defeat Saturday night. Jaret Wright was finally physically able to start Saturday night. His struggles in that game, due to rust, could not have been unexpected. Wright could fairly be expected to improve with more work, but his history says that the pertinent question will be whether he can hold up physically. Carl Pavano remains on the disabled list after back and backside injuries. With all of this, the Yankees currently lead the American League in team ERA at 3.84. So if pitching questions abound, they have not all added up to a pitching crisis. Taken together, the first 12 games of the 2006 season have been one big statistical oddity for the Yankees. The Yankees also lead the American League in runs scored, averaging 6.7 runs per game. These numbers, leading the league in the most fundamental baseball categories, might normally suggest a 9-3 record much more than it would suggest 6-6. But the Yankees have had a trend of winning blowouts and losing the close ones. They have not yet won a game this season in which they have scored fewer than nine runs. This might be an indication of a fatal flaw, or it might be just one of those weird early-season statistical aberrations. The third possibility is that it isn't even that unusual. With the Yankees' offense, they're going to win some one-sided games. It stands to reason that their defeats will generally occur in closer games. Still, their adherents would feel more comfortable with the occasional 3-2 victory in hand. The Yankees will get those close wins if they get more starting performances like the one Chien-Ming Wang delivered Sunday.
