t's one thing John Hammond does not have to worry about so much this summer -
the starting point guard spot.
The Milwaukee Bucks general manager settled much of that debate last June
when he selected Brandon Jennings with the 10th overall pick in the draft.
The hand-wringing was left to others, including the New York Knicks, who
famously passed on Jennings with the eighth pick. Instead the Knicks took
power forward Jordan Hill, who didn't even last a full season in New York
before being traded to Houston in the Tracy McGrady deal.
So on a gorgeous, sunny Monday afternoon at Summerfest, the Bucks were able
to trot out Jennings to mix with the team's newly optimistic fans, to sign
autographs and to share a few gags with Bango, the team mascot.
Later in the day he headed out to Miller Park to throw out the first pitch
before the Brewers-Houston Astros game.
Jennings is spending most of his summer in Los Angeles with his family, but
he's staying in touch with all the changes the Bucks have been making.
He was in New York for some promotional appearances last week and attended
the NBA draft. And he was happy to see the Bucks select his former Oak Hill
(Va.) teammate, Keith "Tiny" Gallon, in the second round after they grabbed
6-foot-11 Larry Sanders of Virginia Commonwealth with the 15th overall pick.
"We got some bigs," Jennings said after he concluded his duties at the "Bucks
Experience" show at the Summerfest Sports Zone. "Larry Sanders is a guy who
likes to rebound, run the floor and dunk, and I love playing with guys like
that."
A sweet deal
It didn't escape Jennings' notice that the Bucks also obtained veteran small
forward Corey Maggette in a trade with Golden State, with center Dan Gadzuric
and guard Charlie Bell going to the Warriors.
"He's a guy who can get to the line," Jennings said of the 30-year-old
Maggette, who will be entering his 12th pro season. "That's what we missed
last year. He can get you 20 or more (points per game), so I'm excited."
Maggette was part of a high-octane Warriors offense that featured shooting
guard Monta Ellis and rookie point guard Stephen Curry.
"He runs the floor," Jennings said of the 6-6 Maggette. "Even though he
demands the ball a lot, that's all right, though. We're going to need
somebody who can take over at the end of the game."
Free-agent negotiations begin Thursday, and Jennings said he hopes guard John
Salmons will choose to return to the Bucks.
Salmons helped the Bucks to a 22-8 run to finish the season as Milwaukee
qualified for the Eastern Conference playoffs, breaking a postseason drought
that had lasted three years.
"Me and John had a good thing going," Jennings said. "Of course I want to
play with a guy like that again."
Jennings was asked about LeBron James' eventual destination in free agency
but said with a laugh, "I really don't care."
The Cleveland star will begin talks this week with teams including New
Jersey, New York, Miami, Chicago and the Cavaliers.
The speculation in New York is that James would have been much more
interested in the Knicks if they had a better supporting cast, particularly a
dynamic young point guard in Jennings.
In a New York Times interview last week, Jennings was asked if he ever
thought the Knicks gave him serious consideration with the No. 8 pick last
summer.
"I'm going to have to say no," Jennings said.
A better fit
And when asked how he might have fit in with the Knicks, Jennings said: "You
know, I could have come to the Knicks and things might not have gone down the
right way.
"Going to Milwaukee actually helped me because my coach, Scott Skiles, taught
me a lot, being a point guard in the league himself."
Jennings started in all 89 games with the Bucks last season and helped them
take a 3-2 lead in an opening-round playoff series against Atlanta before
they were ousted by the Hawks.
He didn't win the league rookie of the year award, which instead went to
Sacramento's Tyreke Evans. But Jennings made the biggest impact of any elite
rookie in helping his team improve (a 12-game turnaround).
So it was Jennings at Summerfest on Monday, soaking in the attention from a
big crowd at the Sports Zone and drawing a long line for autographs.
The fans wanted to know what he thought of the Bucks draft and how eager he
was for his second season.
And they cheered when Bucks television voice Jim Paschke said Jennings
"should have been the rookie of the year."
Even back home in Los Angeles, Jennings said, people know about the Bucks now.
"Now everybody is trying to get on the bandwagon and become a Bucks fan,"
Jennings said. "I guess that's the good thing about it."
