As they work on their fourth album, Faris and co are obsessing over weird
synths and Thundercats. Kevin EG Perry talks to Tom Cowan.
當 The Horrors 正忙於他們第4張專輯錄製的時候，主唱 Faris 與 鍵盤手 Tom
迷戀起各式各樣稀奇古怪的合成器，還有卡通《霹靂貓ThunderCats》，以下是 NME
特派記者 Kevin EG Perry 與鍵盤手 Tom Cowan 在 The Horrors 專屬錄音室所做的訪談
The Horrors are in experimental mood. After ripping up 'Skying'and handing it
over to their mates for their ‘Higher’ remix box-set, they've been locked
away intheir east London studio with their noses pressed to the fourth album
grindstone.
The Horrors 在他們的東倫敦的錄音室完成了第4張錄音室專輯 ‘Skying’ 與今年3月

Last year, guitarist Josh Hayard dropped hints that the album would be
influenced by space-rockers Hawkwind, while Faris Badwan compared recording
to ”when you’re a kid and you get really into playing with your Thundercats
toys” Who know whattangents they’ve gone off on since then?
Well, synth magician Tom Cowan does,and, as he explains, the band are on an
obsessive quest to push things forward.
去年年底，吉他手 Josh Hayard 在專訪時暗示第4張新專輯受到70樂團 《Hawkwind》
的 《太空搖滾 space-rockers》風格所影響。
正當主唱 Faris Badwan 巧妙譬喻形容做音樂的心情，就像小時候玩《霹靂貓
ThunderCats》玩具一樣的投入時，話題不小心就離題到十萬八千里去。
好在合成器魔術師 Tom Cowan 秉持原本的話題，他解釋說，他覺得這是當樂團熱中於音
樂時，會不斷想超越與顛覆的心情。

NME: What’s going to set the next Horrors album apart from any thing you've
done before?
已經有開始著手準備下一張專輯了嗎？還是你們已經完成了一部分了呢？
Tom Cowan: Well, we’ve been in the studio for a few months now and it’s
recently expanded. We were presented with this pyramid-shaped synthesizer
which was designed by Pete Fowler for the vedio for ‘Changing The Rain’.
Richard Russell from XL Records decided that it should be a real thing and
not just live in a cartoon world. We got Pete to design a couple with his
friends and they built two of them andwe were given them.
It’s a fantastic machine. It's got colourful lights, big speakers and a lot
of knobs.
是的～我們已經在工作室工作了好幾個月，最近有了新發展。我們有一個金字塔造型的
合成器想法，這個想法源自於 Pete Fowler 幫我們拍攝與製作的動畫 mv "Changing The
Rain"。 XL Records 老闆 Richard Russell 覺得那個金字塔造型的合成器實在很有趣，
於是決定將它從虛擬世界裡時現在現實生活中。我們請了 Pete Fowler 幫我們做設計，
並將設計交付給他的兩個朋友來負責製造，因此我們有了兩個實體的"金字塔合成器"，它
們是一對夢幻的機器，光彩眩目，上面有許多小燈泡與大按鈕。

NME:Will it be part of the live show?
"金字塔合成器"，它將會是現場表演的一部分嗎？
Tom Cowan: It look so good, it'd be a shame not to. I'll just have to find
a way to use the damn thing. It hasn’t got a keyboard, but it’s a great
noise machine. We’re going to have a play around with it.
What a wonderful thing to come our way! We’ve also been contacted to put a
new kind of experimental keyboard though its paces. I don’t know how much
I'm allowed to say, but it's unlike anything that has been before, It's
amazing. Lots of new music seems to spring out of new technology so I'm
excites to get to be at the forefront of that.
"金字塔合成器" 真的很棒，不使用它就太可惜了。我一直在找尋使用它的機會，遲遲
沒做的原因是"金塔合成器"沒有鋼琴鍵盤在上面。
它發出的聲效真的很殺，我們會是用它在表演現場，這將是一件美好的事情。
我們因此做了許多音樂實驗，嘗試把各式各樣的鍵盤與 "金字塔合成器" 連結上，我不
知道我可以在這裡透露多少訊息有關我們實驗後的結果，但我要說的是，我們得到的結
果讓我們很滿意，出乎我的們意料之外，這實在太驚人了，因為這個新技術讓我們在作
音樂時靈感湧現，我很高興我們又再次往前邁進。

NME: Will this new technology radically change the band's sound?
這項新技術是否完全改變了樂隊的音樂呢？
Tom Cowan: it’s one of the untold stories of music evolution and the beginning
of new genres. People talk about certain bands and certain artists being at
the forefront, being the ’first’ or being the inventors of a certain sort of
sound. While it take someone with an imagination to use a new piece of
technology in away that is new and exciting, someone still needs to have
invented that piece of technology. We haven’t had a lot of new technology
recently. It’s been a lot’s of re-hashed bits of old ideas and not a lot of
truly new stuff. Right now that seems to be changing. It should open up a lot
of new doors for people.
喔～有關我們的音樂進化，或者是否展開新的音樂流派，這又是個不能透露的祕密。
人們總是議論著某些的樂團或是藝術家所帶領的風潮，他們是所謂得 "先鋒者"or
"第一人"，或是發現了某種新聲音。雖然他們發揮巧思利用某種新技術有了新創作，
讓人振奮與耳目一新，但還是需要有人持續發展新的技術，才能不斷創新。
我們最近有很多新的技術，但大部分還是會沿用一些舊的技術，加以改造、重整， 老實說
真正使用全新的東西並沒有很多。現在很多事情都是無時無刻的在不斷改變，多了許多的
可能性。

NME: When can we expect to hear the new material?
什麼時候有機會可以期待聽到新的作品呢？
Tom Cowan: We want to get the album out for May,or something like that.
We’re just going to try and see how it goes. We’re not in rush or anything.
We’ve learnd a lot of lessons in the last few years.We’regoing to take our
time doing it and make sure it’s just right. So this year at some point .....
我們想要在今年5月發行新專輯，但沒有一定的時間表。目前我們還是想看看這些音樂實驗
的後續還有所樣的發展，我們不急迫響馬上完成它，從以往的經驗已經讓我們學到教訓，
這次我們要從容不迫的把音樂做到最好，所以，可能會是今年的某一個時間點大家就會聽到
我們的新作品了。
