Veteran pitchers to lead Braves by example on the mound

ATLANTA -- Looking to solidify their pitching staff, the Braves were successful
in their effort to lure Tom Glavine back to Atlanta. Now as they head toward
Spring Training, they can only cross their fingers and wonder if Mike Hampton
will prove healthy enough to help their rotation.

It's been six years since Glavine last played for the Braves and seemingly even
longer since Hampton was healthy. Now the two former 20-game winners find
themselves looking to prove they still have something in the tank and can be
the reliable starters that Atlanta needs to get back to the postseason.

During Glavine's previous tour of duty in Atlanta from 1987-2002, he was a key
member of what many consider the best rotation the game has seen. Those days
when he, Greg Maddux and John Smoltz frustrated opponents on a nightly basis
are gone. But back together with Smoltz again, Glavine is looking to taste the
fountain of youth at least one more time before ending his accomplished career.

Niekro's assessment might be a little generous. But the Braves aren't looking
for Glavine to be the ace that he was earlier in his career. They simply want
the 42-year-old southpaw to provide depth behind Smoltz and Tim Hudson,
who will team to anchor the rotation for the fourth straight season.

When the Braves signed Glavine in November, Smoltz's response was filled with
relief. He was happy his good friend was coming home after spending five years

rotation.

Once it was determined in April's first week of '07 that Hampton would miss a
second straight season rehabbing from another elbow surgery, the Braves

viable solutions.

their starters. That was 12 less than they received a year before and more than
80 less than when they last visited the playoffs in 2005.

"The pressure of winning was so great on myself and Huddy," Smoltz said. "I've

Hudson's struggles during the season's final five weeks took him out of the
running for the National League Cy Young Award and put a sour ending on an
otherwise respectable 16-win season. Smoltz willed himself to a 14-win season
that certainly would have been much better had he not been saddled by a sore
right shoulder that handicapped him in June and forced him to spend July's
first couple weeks on the disabled list.

As he prepares to pitch the 2008 season at the age of 41, Smoltz appears more
receptive to the idea of occasionally missing starts with the hope that he'll
be able to stay fresh throughout the season. Part of his reason for gaining
this comfort is the fact that he believes the pitching staff has legitimate
depth.

"Baseball exposes [your weaknesses] over a length of time," Smoltz said. "You

With their weakness having been their pitching staff both of the past two
seasons, the Braves believe they've addressed that issue. With Glavine, they
have somebody who is coming off a season in which he completed 200-plus innings
and notched 13 wins. Those who consider it to have been a bad season look at
the fact that he went 0-2 with a 14.81 ERA in his final three starts.

"Glav can still pitch," Chipper Jones said. "I think having him will help turn

While Glavine is sure to get some attention in camp, many eyes will be on
Hampton, who hasn't been healthy since May 2005. The 35-year-old left-hander
underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery in September of that
year, and while attempting to come back last year, he learned that a tendon
in his elbow hadn't reacted normally to the surgery.

Carlyle.

Jurrjens, who was acquired from the Tigers in October, and Reyes have the
greatest upside. But James, who says his previously ailing shoulder has reacted
well after a few months of rest, is considered the early favorite to win the
rotation's fifth spot.

Bennett, who didn't even begin starting again until late last season with
Triple-A Richmond, is out of options. If he doesn't win a rotation spot, he
could prove valuable as a long reliever and spot starter for a pitching staff
that has at least a few guys who could benefit from an occasional break.
Bennett 直到去年季末在3A－Richmond之前都沒先發（07年在3A先發６次勇士
隊２次，再之前要回溯到03年海盜3A），已沒option可用。假如他沒贏得先發
