Coming in on top is Giants’ front office lead Brian Sabean with Nationals GM Jim Bowden hot on his heels. Three time World Series winning GM Brian Cashman and ‘Moneyball’ centerpiece Billy Beane also made our top five. Each writer voted for 5 General Managers on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis. Voting records for each writer are listed below the summary of voting. The Worst GM 1. Brian Sabean, San Francisco Giants 2. Jim Bowden, Washington Nationals 3. Brian Cashman, New York Yankees 4. Billy Beane, Oakland Athletics 5. J.P. Ricciardi, Toronto Blue Jays 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Points Brian Sabean 1 2 2 -- -- 19 Jim Bowden 2 -- 1 1 -- 15 Brian Cashman 1 1 -- -- -- 9 Billy Beane 1 -- -- 1 -- 7 J.P. Ricciardi -- 1 1 -- -- 7 Ed Wade -- 1 -- 1 -- 6 Jim Hendry -- -- 1 -- 1 4 Ned Colletti -- -- -- 1 1 3 Neal Huntington -- -- -- -- 2 2 Omar Minaya -- -- -- 1 -- 2 Dayton Moore -- -- -- -- 1 1 Peter Fritsch: 1. Brian Sabean - Giants. It is amazing he still has a job. How many crippled, 36-year-old veterans does a GM have to sign before discovering the folly of this activity? 2. Brian Cashman - Yankees. With a $200 million dollar payroll there is no excuse for not making the playoffs. 3. J.P. Ricciardi - Blue Jays. Although the AL East is tough the Blue Jays have never even sniffed the playoffs during his tenure. 4. Omar Minaya - Mets. See Brian Cashman. 5. Neal Huntington - Pirates. Three words: Jason Bay trade. Michael Walsh: 1. Billy Beane - Athletics. For a supposed genius this guy has achieved almost absolutely nothing. You could argue he has actually been more of a detriment than a success. 2. J.P. Ricciardi - Blue Jays. Similar to Beane, but without even a hint of the playoffs. 3. Brian Sabean - Giants. Aaron Rowand….seriously? This is just one of many that aren’t even questionable moves, they are moronic. It’s as if he wants the Giants to fail. 4. Jim Bowden - Nationals. Has the track record of a homeless man who can be seen constantly hanging around the dog track. 5. Jim Hendry - Cubs. I am a Cubs fan and although I have a great feeling about what the Cubs are attempting to build I also have serious concerns about some of these moves. All that money into pitchers who could explode violently (Zambrano) or revert back to mediocre ways (Dempster, Lilly) and then you let Kerry Wood walk with Kevin Gregg as his replacement? I’m just as worried as I am hopeful. Tyler Hissey: 1. Jim Bowden - Nationals. See my article.( http://tinyurl.com/ae8je3 ) 2. Ed Wade – Astros. Wade is a close second. The Astros farm system is a mess largely due to Wade’s decision to trade away young, cheap players for over-the-hill veterans. 3. Brian Sabean – Giants. Two words: Barry Zito. Two more words: Aaron Rowand. When a team is not ready to compete it is more than foolish for a GM to use scarce resources on short-term players commanding big dollars. 4. Ned Colletti - Dodgers. The Manny trade and Dodger playoff appearance from a weak, weak division covers up his many blunders. He spent more on his outfield than the Rays spent on their entire playoff roster. Juan Pierre anyone? He is a serious over-spender whose poor decisions would be more magnified if they were not in the west. 5. Dayton Moore – Royals. Moore spent over $12 million on the likes of Willie Bloomquist and Kyle Farnsworth this past off-season. Loved the Zack Greinke signing, but the Royals need to seriously change the organizational mindset to make a real turn around. Thomas Wayne: 1. Jim Bowden - Nationals. See Tyler’s top notch article. It says it all. 2. Brian Sabean - Giants. Spending money for the sake of spending money it would appear. 3. Jim Hendry – Cubs. A competent GM would have tossed some nice loot at Bobby Abreu (instead of Bradley) and kept Kerry Wood. Those are winning moves. Dempster? Fukudome? Gregg? Those are moves that have you looking at year 101 and counting. 4. Billy Beane – Athletics. In his first 11 seasons his record is 976-804 with five playoff appearances, getting out of the first round only once. Former Cardinal GM Walt Jocketty over that same time period was 980-800 with six playoff appearances, playing in the NLCS four times, making it to the WS twice and winning it all once. St. Louis is a small market club just like the A’s. No one ever calls Jocketty a genius. Maybe that’s because Jocketty never had a book hyping his success before he ever really had any. 5. Ned Colletti – Dodgers. Signing Andruw Jones to take a chance he returns to glory is not bad, at somewhere around $4 or $5 million per. But nearly $20M per? What a joke. Scott Jensen: 1. Brian Cashman - Yankees. Competes with twice the budget of the average team and hasn’t advanced deep into the playoffs in how long? 2. Brian Sabean – Giants. Seems to be getting worse. Apparent fear of offense. Barry Zito? 3. Jim Bowden – Nationals. If he spent more he’d be the worst. Consistently makes bad moves and can’t learn from them – or doesn’t care. 4. Ed Wade- Astros. Future? What Future? Let’s pillage the farm season so we can be a little above average. 5. Neal Huntington- Pirates. Traded his two biggest assets for junk. Has anyone yet said “good move, Neal”? -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.112.5.3
