1st delivery of MRJ delayed by 4 years
Delivery of Japan's first domestically-produced passenger aircraft in
half a century has been delayed by 4 years.
Mitsubishi Aircraft announced on Thursday that the Mitsubishi Regional
Jet will not be delivered until at least April 2017. That's 4 years
later than the company's initial plan drawn up in 2008 and the third
time that the schedule has been postponed. The company was founded in
2008.
The first test flight has been also put off, by more than one year, to
at least April 2015.
Company officials said production and delivery of engines and other
parts are taking longer than anticipated. They said developing an
airplane equipped with sophisticated safety features takes time.
The MRJ is the first passenger aircraft developed and assembled in
Japan in half a century. The project is partially funded by the
government.
Mitsubishi Aircraft has booked orders for 325 MRJs from All Nippon
Airways and some US carriers.
Observers say repeated delays in the schedule could hurt the company's
ability to win more orders.
