Cathay Pacific planning new lounges for Hong Kong airport
By David Flynn published 28 Jul, 2011
Cathay Pacific is planning new lounges for Hong Kong International Airport to
match its forecasts for an increase in business travel.
The airline already has the award-winning and highly-regarded Wing and Pier
lounges, the slick new Cabin and even an ancillary Gate 16 lounge – but
those won't be enough to sate future demand, says General Manager for Product
Alex McGowan.
“If you look at the growth of our airline, if you look at the number of
aircraft we’re ordering over the next few years, we’ll definitely need to
add more lounge space at Hong Kong to ensure that we have enough lounge
capacity to meet demand” McGowan tells Australian Business Traveller.
"It’s a question of available space, and we're working with the airport
authorities to make sure that we find something that can provide the
foundation for a really good passenger experience."
McGowan cites "natural light and window views” as key requirements for Cathay
’s next lounge. “For any lounge we look at developing in the future, having
nice open windows and vistas is core to the proposition."
The Cabin is McGowan’s benchmark for the new Cathay Pacific lounge
experience, although he suggests that any additional lounge may not
necessarily be shared between business and first – it’s more a matter of
how much space the Hong Kong flag carrier can lay its hands on.
“That worked for the Cabin because it was a 1,300 square metre space, and if
an opportunity arises to do something similar we could."
In the meantime, work continues on the upgrade to the award-winning Wing.
The lower level reopened in April for business class passengers, with the
upper level now closed for renovations.
“That will be under construction for the rest of this year and should open
very early next year - before Chinese New Year is our target,” McGowan says.
“Then we’ll move onto the First Class lounge.”
The Pier is likely to be next on the list with McGowan noting that “it’s
certainly on the agenda, although we haven’t formalised our plans on that
yet.”
