HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros on Tuesday re-signed catcher Brad Ausmus to a
two-year, $7.5 million contract plus incentives and infielder Mike Lamb to a
one-year, $1.7 million contract plus incentives.
Both players contributed to Houston's first trip to the World Series in
franchise history in 2005. Ausmus is the starting catcher, while Lamb has
filled in at several spots and been one of the Astros' best clutch hitters.
Ausmus, 36, batted .258 in 2005 with three home runs and 47 RBIs in 134
games. He led all National League catchers in the second half with 55 hits.
During the 2005 postseason, he hit .268 with a homer and two RBIs. His home
run in Game 4 of the National League Division Series tied the game in the
bottom of the ninth inning, and Houston went on to beat Atlanta in a
postseason-record 18 innings to clinch the series.
A former All-Star, Ausmus has played seven seasons in Houston, including the
past five, hitting .250 with 33 home runs and 298 RBIs. He first joined the
Astros after being acquired from the Tigers in a trade on Dec. 10, 1996.
Following two seasons in Houston, he returned to Detroit in another trade on
Jan. 14, 1999. Ausmus came back to the Astros on Dec. 11, 2000, along with
Doug Brocail and Nelson Cruz in exchange for Roger Cedeno, Chris Holt and
Mitch Meluskey.
Ausmus, the only Gold Glove catcher in Astros franchise history, earned Gold
Gloves in 2001 and '02. He is also the Houston franchise leader in games
caught with 914.
Over 13 big-league seasons with San Diego (1993-96), Detroit (1996,
1999-2000) and Houston (1997-98, 2001-05), Ausmus has hit .255 with 71 homers
and 508 RBIs.
Lamb, 30, hit .236 with 12 home runs and 53 RBIs for the Astros in 2005. He
played in 125 games and started at five different positions, including 47
starts at first base, 12 at third base, 11 in left field, one in right field
and one as the designated hitter.
Lamb hit a career-high five triples and recorded 13 doubles. He walked 22
times while striking out 65 times in 322 at-bats. Lamb batted .250 with three
home runs and four RBIs in the 2005 postseason, including hitting .500 in the
NLDS against the Braves.
In 594 career big-league games with Texas (2000-03) and the Astros (2004-05),
Lamb has hit .274 with 45 home runs and 228 RBIs.
