Straight after a bad defeat, the dressing room will quite often resonate with
bullish shouts. “Forget about it lads,” the manager might urge. “It’s
gone now. Nothing we can do about it. Let’s start putting our minds to the
next game.”

As a rule, those sentiments would be sensible too. No point, after all, in
crying over spilt milk. Stewing over poor displays can tear you apart.
In this case, however, I would recommend that the Arsenal boys hold on to
that sick feeling at the pit of their stomachs; remember how they felt as the
Birmingham City players danced around Wembley, madly celebrating a win that
was borne, in part, from sheer bloody-mindedness.

Robin van Persie, Jack Wilshere et al must not let themselves forget,
otherwise Sunday’s fiasco will serve no purpose at all. Lessons must be

‘man up’ when the going gets tough.

In short, an attitude like Birmingham’s wouldn’t go amiss, the sort
epitomised by Roger Johnson who, calf strain or not, simply refused to come

inspired by that kind of example. It tends to spread through the side like
wildfire to lend a very doughty streak.
And Arsène Wenger, in fairness, could do with some of that. He could improve
his lot greatly by complimenting the silky football everyone admires with the
sort of over-my-dead-body attitude all winners possess. If he can’t manage
that sooner rather than later, Arsenal’s entire season, after promising so
much, stands in mortal danger of fizzling out.

There was clearly something missing in the Carling Cup final. Yes, Arsenal
carved out several good chances, only to be denied by some excellent
goalkeeping. But for Ben Foster they would have surely won the game.

Yet that should no be allowed to disguise the fact that, ultimately, Wenger’
s boys failed to respond to the occasion. Complacent? Nervous? It was

players who produced their best as the strong favourites laboured under the
weight of expectation.

That has to be worrying for everyone concerned. So has Wenger’s explanation
that his team initially lacked sharpness due to fatigue, due to the number of
games his players have recently faced. True or not, that kind of talk can be
used as an excuse in a dressing room that, inevitably, will have lost some
self-belief.

Time for mental strength, then; to bounce back by recalling what got them
here in the first place. How it came to pass that they beat Barcelona whilst

Clearly, there are plenty of plus points on which to cling. One miserable
defeat cannot be allowed to undo all the good work. So starting with Wednesday
’s FA Cup fifth-round replay against Leyton Orient, Arsenal must kick on
again with renewed enthusiasm.

A good win at the Emirates followed by another when Sunderland visit on
Saturday and the club can head for Barcelona with a little more optimism,
especially if United slip up at Chelsea or Liverpool.

But whatever happens, Arsenal should never forget Sunday’s bitter taste of
defeat. It could actually be the making of this talented side.
