<摘要>
An examination of uniquely shared innovations in the basic vocabulary and the
morphology of the Austronesian languages of Taiwan, especially the numerals,
leads to a new hypothesis on their genealogy, on the process by which
Austronesian-speaking peoples settled Taiwan, and on two early out-of Taiwan
migrations which resulted in (a) the Malayo-Polynesian expansion, and (2) the
formation of the Tai-Kadai family.

可能許多人對沙加爾先生比較陌生,所以我簡單介紹一下.
他是法國人,專長是音韻學和歷史語言學.
主要研究的語言是漢語及南島語.
在漢語方面,他對客贛語及上古漢語都有很重要的學術著作.
在南島語方面, 他最特別的主張是南島語與漢語同源.
這個看法在研究南島語的語言學家之間還有很多爭論,
但是在中國卻大受歡迎.原因不必說大家都知道.
南島語系跟其他語系的關係,還是一個研究中的問題,
有興趣的朋友可以去聽聽看.
