De Rossi: 'We embarrassed ourselves'

Daniele De Rossi fears that when the Azzurri return to Italy,
they will “realise just how much we embarrassed ourselves.”
The 3-2 defeat to Slovakia sends them out of the 2010 World Cup
in the group phase for the first time in 36 years and for the first
time ever without winning a game.
“After a defeat you spread the blame among everyone. It's banal,
but true. We wavered in our performances and were never consistent,”
said the Roma midfielder.
“There's no point looking for alibis, as we realise we embarrassed
ourselves, but I think over the next few days on our return to Italy,
we'll realise just how much.”
Italy finished bottom of the group behind Paraguay, Slovakia and
New Zealand.
“We were laughing and joking before the game, as I never for a
moment believed we'd go out in the first round. It seemed impossible.
“If we'd gone out in the final 16 or the quarter-finals against
Brazil or Spain, we could analyse a bit clearer why we went out.
“Against these opponents, quite frankly, logic appears to have gone
out the window.
“Of course I want to get back out there and play for Italy. There
will be great moments in future with the Nazionale, I'm sure of it.”
