STANFORD, Calif. -- Slumping Vera Zvonareva made another another
early exit.
The fifth-seeded Russian suffered a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (6) loss Tuesday
to American qualifier Meghann Shaughnessy in the first round of
the Bank of the West Classic.
Zvonareva was one of three seeds in action at the $585,000 hardcourt
tournament. No. 7 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia Montenegro and No. 8
Francesca Schiavone of Italy take on qualifiers later Tuesday.
Zvonareva won the hardcourt title at Memphis in February, beating
Shaughnessy in the final. But since losing to eventual finalist
Mary Pierce in the third round of the French Open, she has dropped
five of eight matches.
It was double revenge for Shaughnessy, who also lost to Zvonareva
in the first round last week at Cincinnati but improved to 2-4 in
the all-time series. She next faces the winner of Tuesday's match
between American Alexandra Stevenson and Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova.
Jankovic meets American Marissa Irvin and Schiavone faces Russia's
Alina Jidkova.
