XDDD ============================================================================ If Yankees pony up the money, A-Rod isn't going anywhere In focus, by Peter Abraham It is generally accepted that Alex Rodriguez will opt out of his contract with the Yankees after the season to become a free agent. But his agent, Scott Boras, isn't sure that is necessarily the case. "Alex is going to make his own decision when the time comes," Boras said. "I put those clauses in that contract with a lot of intent and design to it. It just gives him a choice. It's not automatic." Boras thought of everything when Rodriguez agreed to his landmark 10-year, $252 million deal with the Texas Rangers before the 2001 season. The first opt-out option comes due on Nov. 10. There are also opt-out options in 2008 and 2009 unless Rodriguez receives a raise to $32 million a season. "I didn't know if his family life was going to be different or if he would want to examine whether he wanted to stay with the team he was on or his situation with that team," Boras said. "It was to give him choices." Boras believes there would be many choices if Rodriguez becomes a free agent. "There are a number of teams that can afford a stature player, much more so than in 2000 because of revenue sharing," he said. "There are a lot of teams getting $30 (million)-$35 million in revenue sharing every year. "The other thing is that signing Alex has proven to be good business. Even (Rangers owner) Tom Hicks said it was a good move. Their property values went up, their stadium-rights deals went up, their television contracts went up. There are a whole bunch of teams that would like to get their hands on Alex." Boras said that he and Rodriguez have an agreement not to discuss his status until after the season. The plan is for Rodriguez to spend a few days in California with Boras to talk it over. "He'll come out to the coast and camp out for a few days," Boras said. "But until then, we're severely focused on performance. We don't want to interface with the Yankees until after the season, and the Yankees don't want that either." Economics ultimately will shape the decision. Either the Yankees will pay to keep Rodriguez out of the market or they won't. But if emotions play any role, two recent events will work in favor of the Yankees. When Rodriguez hit his 500th home run on Aug. 4, he appeared genuinely touched by the reaction of the crowd. He also mentioned the fans' support in the days leading up to the milestone. For the first time in his tenure as a Yankee, the fans seemed to embrace him. The spontaneous celebration by his teammates also impressed Rodriguez. Seeing the Yankees pour out of the dugout to greet him at home plate had him smiling even days later. "That was one of the most special moments of my career," he said. "It was like we were back in high school." The Yankees came out of the dugout in support of Rodriguez again on Tuesday, this time when Toronto's Josh Towers hit him with a pitch. No punches were thrown, but several players - particularly Ron Villone, Jorge Posada and Shelley Duncan - were visibly angry. Roger Clemens then backed Rodriguez in the seventh inning when he drilled Alex Rios in the back with a fastball. That cost Clemens a five-game suspension and a $1,500 fine. Would the Yankees have backed Rodriguez to that degree last season? It's uncertain. Like sushi or German beer, Rodriguez is a bit of an acquired taste. Yes, he draws attention to himself. But he's a talented player with the relentless work ethic of a minor-league scrub. No player in the game invests more time or effort into improving. The Yankees have come to appreciate that. They've also noticed how Rodriguez has become a mentor to Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera and other young players. He's even learned how to handle the media better, talking more about the team and less about himself. Awkward moments remain, but there are fewer than in previous years. "I've always said this, that Alex is comfortable in New York. Is that comfort level building? I don't know for sure, but it seems that way," Boras said. "He seems happy there, and he's certainly playing well for a contending team. But is this the only place he can be happy? I don't know. He has to decide that." In the end, the money will determine whether Rodriguez stays. But if the Yankees do their part financially, Rodriguez has no other reason to flee. Whatever issues he had before have disappeared As he said after he hit No. 500, the happy ending could be there for him.
