Yankees third baseman equals Major League April record of 14

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Everyone is expecting to see an
Alex Rodriguez homer these days, and on Monday, he didn't
disappoint. The Yankees third baseman wasted no time,
either, clubbing his 13th home run of the year during his
first at-bat and adding his 14th in his final at-bat against
the Devil Rays.
The first home run to left field came on a 2-2 pitch from
Rays starter Casey Fossum in the second inning, and it gave
the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
The second, also to left, drew the Yankees to within 10-8
in the ninth inning. The score held, however, as the Yankees
lost their fourth straight game.
With No. 13, Rodriguez tied former Seattle Mariners outfielder
Ken Griffey Jr. for the American League record for home runs
in April. The 14th broke that record and tied A-Rod for the
Major League April record, set last season by Cardinals first
baseman Pujols.
The home runs extended Rodriguez's hit streak to 23 games,
dating back to last year, and handed him his 34th RBI of the
month, a career high.
The previous high of 31 was reached in August 2003.
Yankees manager Joe Torre said before Monday's game that in
all of his baseball experience, he has never seen a better
stretch of offense for any hitter.
"He's not going to hit 12 home runs every 15 games," Torre said.
"But if he does, watch out."
