Jeter or Rodriguez next in center?
Torre says he's considering the switch

NEW YORK -- The Yankees' search for a new center fielder has yet to produce a
replacement for Bernie Williams, but Joe Torre said Monday that there may be
an option already on the club.
No, he's not talking about Bubba Crosby. He's talking about Derek Jeter or
Alex Rodriguez.
The Yankees' manager told Reuters that he has considered moving either Jeter
or A-Rod to center field, though he hasn't addressed the topic with either
player.
"We've thought about it," Torre said. "We just haven't made a commitment to
that. We haven't broached it with the shortstops."
General manager Brian Cashman has had several discussions with Joe Bick, the
agent for outfielder Brian Giles, though it is believed that Giles'
preference is to sign with a West Coast team, possibly the Dodgers.
That leaves Johnny Damon as the only other real option on the free-agent
market, but Damon's agent, Scott Boras, is seeking a seven-year deal for the
outfielder. The Daily News reported Tuesday that the Yanks aren't interested
in Damon unless it was for a three-year contract.
Juan Pierre is available as part of the Marlins' fire sale, though the
Yankees don't appear to be interested in him.
A-Rod moved from shortstop -- where he won two Gold Gloves in 2002-03 -- to
third base after being traded to the Yankees before the 2004 season. Jeter,
who has won the last two Gold Gloves at shortstop, has never played any other
position in 1,522 career games in the Majors.
"That's happened before hasn't it?" Torre said about converting an infielder
into an outfielder. "Bobby Murcer, Mickey Mantle. Hank Aaron came up as a
second baseman. Robin Yount went to center field.
"It certainly is a consideration."
Should Jeter move to center, it would be natural for Rodriguez to shift back
to his old position at shortstop. Torre believes that it would be an easy
transition for either player to move to center, though the move appears to be
nothing more than a passing thought at the moment.
Said Torre: "Jeter would do anything and so would A-Rod for that matter, to
help this ballclub win."
